EXCERPT

“I have papers in case you’re thinking of firing me,” she said as though she’d read his mind.

“I was not thinking of firing you, Ms. Savoy.”

She laughed, and the effect on him was worse than her smile. The sound swirled around him, making him feel both excited and weak. His heart pounded in his chest like Thunder’s hooves sprinting through the meadow.

“Good, because you’re lucky I agreed to come out here,” she continued, oblivious to her effect on him. “There’s a long waiting list for my one-of-a-kind websites, but I managed to squeeze you in. For a hefty fee, of course. I don’t come cheap.”

“I meant, I’m not thinking of firing you,” he snapped. “I am firing you.”

She blinked then shook her head.

“No, no, no.” She wagged her finger like a schoolteacher reprimanding a student, though she looked nothing like any teacher he’d ever had. “You can’t,” she added, digging into her bag. “I have a contract. Right. Here.” She whipped out an envelope and waved it triumphantly. “It states that I’m here to set up your website. In exchange, I get room and board. It is very legal and binding.” She offered it to him and waited expectantly.

Chase hated the fact that she wasn’t easily intimidated. The women his uncle had sent before would be in tears by now, begging him to let them stay or to be taken to the nearest airport.

“I didn’t sign it, so technically I’m not obligated to honor it. I’m sorry you made the trip out here for nothing, Ms. Savoy.”

“Your uncle said you need me, Mr. Fitzgerald.”

Need her? Miss June, with her prefect lips, brought to mind a different kind of need. There was no room on his ranch for someone like her. She’d only remind him of what was missing in his life, the dream he’d meant to share with one woman.

Book Description:

The Nolan morgue is more than just an ordinary funeral home.

When their newest employee uncovers a supernatural conspiracy connected to a string of child murders, she must use every shred of her intelligence to stop a new breed of serial killer and escape the morgue alive.

After graduating from the mortuary program at Mount Royal University, Camilla Carleton moves to a secluded town in the northern Yukon for her first job at a family-run funeral home. Her new employers, however, are the town’s most controversial citizens, and when strange occurrences begin happening around the morgue—including late night visits from children who were thought to be dead—she won’t stop until she uncovers the truth behind these paranormal events.

But unraveling the funeral home’s secret is just the start. When Camilla is faced with life and death decisions of her own, she must fight to undo a horrific chain of events while struggling to outsmart a serial killer, save her family, and escape the morgue alive.

My Take On The Book:

I was initially hesitant about reading this book, but after reading and re-reading the synopsis I decided what the hell and signed up for the tour. I’m really glad I did!

‘Come Little Children’ is an eerie, haunting and downright frightening book. There were parts that I found myself wanting to skim over, so it wasn’t a perfect read but it was close.

The Great (Pros):

  • The Romance. While a prominent part of the story, it isn’t over the top or overpowering to the actual storyline. The characters had chemistry and at times their interactions make you or me in this case giggle like a schoolgirl lol.

  • The Characters. Even the a-holes were well constructed. I didn’t have any scratch my head, what the hell moments in regards to their actions.

  • The premise of the story. It was creepy and really creative so I really loved it.

  • Peter. Swoon. A talented, ambidextrous, romantic artist. Loyal and passionate. What’s not to love about a man like that? He was a family man through and through. I want my own Peter 😉

  • Camilla. She was an original type of character. A little on the weird side and definitely had some problems but I think that’s what I liked about her. Her differentness worked with this type of book.

  • Abigail. I can’t say too much on this front except evil little Spawn of Satan. She was the perfect mixture of outward innocence and a vile child.

  • The Ending. Tear jerker for sure. I really loved the ending of this book. It was different just like the rest of this story. There was just something so haunting about it. I kind of saw it coming but at the same time I didn’t. It was that will he won’t he moment and I loved it. I didn’t even mind the crying!

The Not So Great (Cons):

  • Inconsistencies & Predictability. Really this is all that holds this story back from ah-maze-ing-ness. Like I said before this, was a near perfect read. Most of what I found I wanted to skim over were the bouts of information overload here and the lack of information there. The other parts were the predictable moments with the exception of the ending. It felt like the scenes in slasher flicks where you’re screaming “Don’t go in there” and they do it anyway.

4 Quills

I’d recommend this to any and all horror buffs. It pushes the boundaries of social norms. Leaving you to question your own morals and asking yourself what you would do in a similar situation. A stand up book and take notice book, worthy of your shelves.

Summary:

After a mysterious virus makes its way into the United States, the government demands that states seal themselves off from one another and do their best to protect their surviving residents. When the state of Florida is bordered off from the surrounding states, Taylen Fincher, a seventeen-year-old girl with a yearning for her former life finds herself wondering how much of what they’ve been told is true.

When Troum took control of the state, he told the residents that the other states had fallen to the virus and that he wouldn’t allow the same thing to happen to them. But Taylen doesn’t believe it. She insists that there is still life outside of the state, and she is going to do whatever it takes to prove it… but her actions will cost her more than she ever expected.

Troum kidnaps Taylen’s sister, Penelope, in hopes of coaxing her into behaving – into being a submissive resident, much like the others. But Taylen isn’t one to give in that easily.

Eager to rescue her sister, Taylen will set out on an adventure that’ll force her to open her heart to the unexpected and to uncover secrets that will change everything.

An Excerpt From Submerged

“Milo, can I ask you something?” I asked, lifting my hand to my lip.

“Not here.” He looked back at Penelope and signaled for me to follow him outside. “Come on.”

I followed Milo out of the Hovercopter, nearly running into him when he stopped suddenly at the end of the walkway. “If you’re wondering if I knew, I didn’t,” he paused, lowering himself onto the ground, “My parents were faithful followers, unwilling to believe things could only get worse after the Outbreak. Though I can’t say much, after all, I was just as naive as they were.”

You weren’t the only one, I thought.

“I had a twin sister,” he said after a moment of silence.

“What happened to her?”

“She died.” He lowered his head as if not sure he wanted to discuss it, but he continued, “Our parents insisted that we join the guard on our seventeenth birthday. She did her best to follow Troum, but over time, she began to grow tired of fighting for a system that clearly didn’t care for its people. She’d spent most of her time serving the Widowed Sector, where she met a boy her age.”

“They fell in love,” I said, knowing exactly where this story was headed.

“I don’t think that it was love. I’d say it was longing more than anything,” he corrected. “She knew what would happen if she began a relationship with a resident, especially one from the Widowed Sector, but she didn’t care.”

“What was her name?” I took a seat next to Milo, resting my head in my hand.

“Miranda,” he said, smiling. “She was a lot like you, you know.”

“I’m not entirely sure that is a good thing.”

“It is.” Milo reached for my hand.

Undertow by K.R. Conway Review

Undertow

Undertow #1

K.R. Conway

Genre:  Young Adults Paranormal Fantasy
Release Date: October 18, 2013
ISBN: 978-0989776301
ASIN: B00FSOCHOK
Pages: 400
Goodreads Rating:  4.33
My Rating: 5

Blurb:

Luckless Eila is unknowingly the last of her kind: Rare. Gifted. Breakable. Stunning Raef is her kind’s historic enemy: Soulless. Lethal. Lost. A legendary death 160 years before would set their lives to collide, forcing a beautiful killer to become a savior, a simple wallflower to become a warrior, and ruthless destiny to become a death sentence.

Summary:

High school senior Eila Walker knows that good luck skips over her like an Easter Bunny on Speed. So when she inherits her grandmother’s million-dollar Cape Cod home, she is downright shocked. And yeah, her new town isn’t perfect: the cheerleaders are heinous clones, the local undertow can kill ya, and her Great Grams was supposedly fried by lightning in the harbor square. Still, Eila is hopeful her luckless days are in the past . . . until history decides to repeat itself.
A self-proclaimed loner and previous-social reject, Eila thinks she’s hit the jackpot when drool-worthy Raef O’Reilly becomes her friendly, yet weirdly protective shadow. But being hauled beneath the waves by an unnatural undertow slams the brakes on bliss – especially when Raef storms to her aid with coal-black eyes and iron-like strength.
Eila, entirely freaked, demands an explanation and Raef comes clean, revealing that neither of them are average humans but rather the genetic remnants of an angelic pissing-match gone wrong. Eila supposedly can channel the power of human souls, while Raef is quite adept at stealing them. Even worse, the legend about her ancestor isn’t such a myth, since Eila’s grandmother was one kick-ass warrior until her lightning-like power backfired. A power that is written all over Eila’s DNA.
Now sought by Raef’s own family for her destructive ability, Eila must trust him to watch her back. But when a quest for information goes terribly wrong, Eila is suddenly left with only two options: become a weapon for the enemy or follow in her Gram’s fearless footsteps to save those she loves. Unfortunately she needs a willing enemy to ignite her suicidal energy and the only one she trusts has been guarding her butt and scorching her lips.

My Take On The Book:

If it were at all possible, I would rate this title a 5.5 (which it is… I’m just too damn lazy to make a new rating jpeg.) From page 1 I was swept away. I haven’t had the pleasure of reading such a unique read since ‘Scars of the Bifrost’. K.R. Conway’s way of writing first person does not limit the story, quite contrary really, it helps to move the story along in a way that anyone can follow and enjoy.
I think one of the things I love most is the unique and original take on ‘Supernatural’ so different from the books now hitting the shelves. Don’t get me wrong, I still like the ‘traditional’ supes, its just nice to read something different every once in a while. Writers of this day almost always seem to fall into the comfort of writing about something we something we know and this is different, something we don’t know.
Funny enough, this book was so well written that I found myself hooked (dangerously so, if you count almost burning my dinner). By chapter 10, this review started manefesticing itself in my head. I  can honestly say with a clear conscience that there isn’t a thing about this book that I didn’t like. The writing style while done I first person did not deter my ability or my want to read this book. There was way too much I liked. Even some of the twists didn’t register in my mind until a couple of seconds before they were revealed so kudos for that Ms. Conway.
I love every single character, good and bad. Their development was spot on! While I’m aware that there is much we have yet to discover, there is no dounbt in my mind that this author spent countless hours meticulously crafting their backstories down to their favorite color and it shows in every loving key stoke.
My only negative comment if you can even call it that would be “Do you hate your readers, because making us wait till summer of 2014 is just cruel and unusual punishment?” I don’t want to have to wait so long for book 2 but I will as I’m sure many other reader will!

Out of Tune Book Blast Giveaway

Posted on Updated on

Twenty-year-old Maggie Roads’ parents are legendary in the country music world. She wants nothing more than to follow their example, but the limelight is not reserved for singers who cannot carry a tune, let alone keep a rhythm.

When her parents tell her they are getting divorced, Maggie decides it’s time to leave home and take her future into her own hands. Moving in with Cole, her best friend and sometimes boyfriend might not be the best of ideas, but she has to start somewhere.

Their off-and-on romance gets even more complicated when Maggie crushes on her new voice teacher, Nathan, who unlocks her stunning potential.

A sensational music career of her own is finally within reach, but Maggie might need more than perfect pitch to find what she is really looking for.

Cole’s steady beat on the drum relaxed her. She could feel his eyes on her as she played, but she did not turn around. He would never know what this meant to her. She had wanted and dreaded this moment forever. She could only imagine what tomorrow would be like, with an audience full of strangers.
She closed her eyes as the music flowed into her. Iza came in on her fiddle, her notes weaving in and out like bright threads in a tapestry. Justin started singing the first lines and she tapped her foot, counting like Nathan had taught her. “Every beat is a physical thing,” he had said. “See the music, feel it, just like you’ve done your whole life. Pearls on a string—let each one slide through your fingers. Measured.”
Mandolin line. Then the bass started. Maggie’s turn.
When she came in, her voice was louder and stronger than it had ever been. Justin’s voice filled her up like honey. She swam through it, adding her own to his. Maybe he was a womanizer and constantly looking at her like, he wanted to get her in bed, but he was an amazing singer. They smiled at each other as they melted into the song.
She had never been inside music like this before. The stage lights sparkled in her eyes and she understood for the first time in her life why musicians put up with all that travelling and recording, and the stressful nights like when her mom was puking her guts out with the flu—the real
flu—but had to go on stage in five minutes. Maggie remembered her smiling as she wiped her mouth and shrugged. “It’s part of the singin’ life, hon. We don’t always get breaks when we need them.” She had patted Maggie on her twelve-year-old head and squared her shoulders as her makeup artist dusted some powder over her pale cheeks. Then she had left for the stage in a flutter of sequins and curls.

My Take On The Book:

Ok so this one isn’t exactly a 5 star book but it is way too good to be a 4.5. There has got to be a better in-between option for these types of books. What more can I say except this book was/is great.

I was a little hesitant to read this when I first read the synopsis but selfishly I’ll admit it had more to do with the best friend/long time crush deal. I don’t know why most books and movies I’ve seen/read lately have that same prominent heart wrenching theme. But that’s not really the point, or at least it isn’t yet lol.

The Great (Pros):

  • Nelson. Whoa, a blue haired artistic hottie. Can you say swoon ::sigh:: ❤
  • Sylvie. Honestly, she seemed worse in the description and I didn’t think I would like her… but I did. She’s actually a really relatable and likable character. I’m sure everyone at some point in their life has wanted to be someone else. Sylvie just happened to take that want a tad too far, OK A LOT too far but in her defense she was coerced. She’s human and that’s exactly what I liked about her most. She had moments of complete and utter dumb-fuckery (pardon my language) but she’s a teen who gets picked on regularly and astral project without the ability to control it so those moments are pretty understandable.
  • Astral Projection. I read a book years ago (like maybe 6 or 7 years ago) about a girl who astral projects and her body gets taken over by what I believe was a long lost relative. I can’t remember too much, like I said it’s been years but I think the book was Stranger with My Face by Lois Duncan. Anyway the point it, that I know I thoroughly enjoyed that book and this book reminded me of it. I really enjoyed the whole concept of astral projecting and the scariness that someone can inhabit your body and you have basically no control over it.

  • Writing Style. I loved the chapter break ups and the way we saw the future and were thrown back into the present. Some parts of it were very predictable but not enough to take away from the story. It was well edited and I was able to immerse myself into the story and picture almost everything that was described.
  • Sam and the whole family dynamic. I loved the whole family, broken and all. They genuinely care for each other and it shows. It gives you the warm and fuzzies even in the worst of times.

The Not So Great (Cons):

  • Kevin. I’m not sure why, maybe it was my love for Nelson but I severely disliked Kevin. He seemed way too fake.
  • Casey. As much as I wanted to like her, I couldn’t  It’s not just that she went out with Kevin, it’s not just how mean she really gets with Sylvie but it’s the lies. Sylvie asks her very directly a few things and she outright lies. That is not best friend behavior. She was not a sympathetic character and I didn’t want Sylvie doing certain things but not because I felt bad for Casey. Sure she had some endearing qualities but they did not out weight her bad.
  • Casey and Sylvie Friendship. It just didn’t feel real. If anything, it seems as if it was more of a comfort thing then an actual friendship. As I said before, friends don’t do what these girls do or try to do to each other.

4.5 Quills

If you enjoyed ‘The Wake Trilogy’ by Lisa McMann then this is definitely the book for you. It’s got the teen angst, the sweetness and cuteness of young love, the darkness of the paranormal and jealousy and it’s haunting, utterly haunting from the cover to the last page. It’s an absolutely great book and an excellent read. Kudos to author Katie Hayoz for creating such an eerie and tangible world.

Fighting for the Edge

(Edge #3)

Jennifer Comeaux

Release Date: 11/05/13

Summary:
Two friends. Two dreams. One night that changes everything…

Ice dancer Aubrey London scoffs at romance. She’s focused on winning a medal at the upcoming Olympics and uses that as her excuse to avoid serious relationships. But when she and longtime friend Chris Grayden are thrown together by unforeseen circumstances, Aubrey finds herself questioning everything she’s ever known about love, complicating her life both on and off the ice.

Pairs skater Emily Petrov embraces romance. She and her husband Sergei still act like honeymooners two years after their wedding. As Emily’s coach, Sergei provides constant support while she prepares to challenge for gold at the Olympics. But Sergei’s support might not be enough to help Emily overcome the one challenge she never saw coming.

With the Games only weeks away, Emily and Aubrey are on the verge of realizing their dreams. But one snowy, stormy night sets in motion a series of events that will test them in ways they never imagined, giving them more to fight for than Olympic medals.

“Jennifer Comeaux puts you in the action, makes you smell the ice and hear the roar of the crowd during the nail-biting competitions, and she’s a master at creating first love jitters in your stomach from the steamy scenes that are so hot without being explicit.” – Christina Jean Michaels, author of Epiphany

Both touching and suspenseful, Fighting for the Edge is a game changer that will have fans of the series giving both the characters and the author a standing ovation once they’ve turned the very last page. If I could pass out medals, Jennifer would earn gold for writing my favorite romance of all time.” – Jenna at Jenna Does Books

Excerpt From Fighting for The Edge

“Bust a Move” had just begun playing, and Chris danced along to the hip-hop rhythm as he closed the space between Aubrey and himself. He set his hands lightly on her hips, and she felt the tingle again. It had been over a month since she’d gone on a date, so she was probably just excited to have the attention. Or maybe it was the wine making her giddy.

Their bodies moved together in time to the music, drifting closer and generating more heat with each beat. Aubrey wrapped her fingers around Chris’s biceps, and he tensed, his fingertips putting more pressure on her hips. She clutched him harder and fought the urge to roam her hands over all his other taut muscles.

In her stiletto heels she wasn’t much shorter than Chris, so she had a prime view of his smile, which never left his face. She couldn’t stop smiling either. She hadn’t felt this kind of energy in a long time. Or possibly ever.
