From the early 16th century to the 21st, the “War for Utopia” rages.
War of the World Makers is a really interesting historicalesque novel with a really cool dash of fantasy and a sprinkle of science fiction. All these aspects serve to make this book easy to read and enjoy.
If I’m being 100% honest, I was initially a tad bit confused when I first dived into Zolo’s story., I had thought I might have jumped midway into a series with no prior knowledge of the world these nicely developed and fleshed out characters occupy but after a couple of pages I found myself pleasantly surprised with not only the story but the writing. I hold a bit of a soft spot for alternate histories and books that are sci-fi adjacent, or fantasy are right up my alley so I was thoroughly invested in the novel, so I was a bit perturbed with the ending. The story itself is a bit fast paced but even by those standards I felt like the ending was too rushed and left me wanting for something… it was unsatisfying, BUT it does feel like since the story was not really resolved in the traditional sense that the author was just setting us up for a sequel… possibly? Hopefully?
I give this book a solid 3.5. I liked it and while I do recommend it… if it’s a standalone novel the ending is frustrating. I’d be more inclined to give this a 4 if I was certain that there was a sequel to tie up any loose ends.
