My Take on the Book:

Eepp! I love this!!!

Having read/reviewed a previous novel from this author I knew I’d like this book but I didn’t expect to love it as much as I did. This was a super quick read for me and I greedily took in every page and scene.

In this book you are introduced to some great characters that are easy to like and grow fond of. Another good note is that you do get to have alternating POVs so there aren’t very many gaps in this story in terms of story progression.

I can’t say enough about this book and yet I’m fearful of saying too much and ruining the experience for all of you! But I will say that not everything is at it appears and you should read this book with an open mind because chances are, if you’ve guessed how something is going to go, that you are wrong.

5 Quills

Here’s to hoping that there is a sequel to this book in the works, so I can read more about these characters! There were a lot of unanswered questions and it did finish off as open ended so that’s another reason to hope for a follow up.

It’s a solid read that is sure to enthrall and entice you. Kudos to Ms. Lepore for creating such a vivid world with such interesting characters.

Book Description:

In the gritty city of Dusk, seventeen-year-old Irina makes her living as the street magician Bantheir’s assistant. The job isn’t glamorous, but she loves the crowds, the shows, and most of all, the illusion of magic. But Irina’s world is shattered the night she is arrested and charged as Bantheir’s accomplice to murder—murder by magic.

Real magic, the kind that’s been forbidden since the old wars.

Irina finds the idea of flashy showman Bantheir using actual magic to kill someone laughable, but she’s the only one who sees how ridiculous the claim is. But how can she convince everyone Bantheir is innocent when they’ve already made up their minds? Desperate, Irina must decide who she can trust to help her win her freedom. Is the surly, handsome Captain Leonid telling the truth when he says he believes Irina is innocent, or is he just using her to get to Bantheir? Irina said she wanted to know the truth, but when she stumbles across a dark secret that changes everything, will she be strong enough to survive?

My Take:

Wow, just wow.

When I first started reading this book I was interested but not hundred percent invested. But it didn’t take long for me to follow love with this story and the characters or to be sucked in by the mystery or the setting. Once I reached chapter 4 I was I was not able to put the book down.

I really love it when I’m able to imagine everything in a book, the world the characters are living in. But what I find even more special is when the author has the ability to make you care about characters and have you fully invested well-being and what is going to happen to them. This book has all that and more. You got a strong heroine who is so kindhearted and good that it occasionally becomes irksome… But I promise that’s a good thing. Irina is a great and loyal character with a neck of a lot of spunk and perfectly matched with the characters surrounding her.

The whole premise of this book focuses on murder and forbidden magic with some romances thrown in to spice things up a little bit more. And I loved every gosh darn second of it!

Forewarning, there IS a bit of a love triangle but it’s over so quickly, I was able to get passed it without feeling frustrated or annoyed. So, if I can get through it, and you all know how much I bitch and moan about love triangles and predictability, then you can rest assured that it does not dominate or mar the pages of this amazingly written book.

Speaking of romance, Irina’s love interest is perfectly suited for her and has clawed his way to the top of my book boyfriend list with his swoon worthy description and heroic actions.

4.5 Quills

I’m really looking forward to reading the next installment and learning more about this world and what consequences our heroes will face!

Revealers & Uninvited by Amanda Marrone Book Spotlight + #Giveaway #TipsySpooktacular Stop 5

Posted on Updated on

Ahem.

 Ohai there!

Welcome back!

Today I have a treat for you all. It’s another book spotlight BUT there are 2 and they are NOT part of a series :O I know that seems odd from someone like me who absolutely LOVES to read book series, serieses… Ehh I know, not very English major or author-y of me but whatever, I think the first one is correct.

So back on topic, this is more of an Author Spotlight. I don’t exactly remember when I bought these books just that I love them and I really hope you all take a chance on them. I know the goodreads rating isn’t all that great for one of them but I think the books rock.

The books in question are ‘Uninvited’ and ‘Revealers’ by Amanda Marrone. Uninvited is an out of the box vampire read. Abso-freaking-lutely like nothing I have ever read when it comes to vampires. Sure I got a Dangerous Girls by R.L. Stine vibe from it BUT it was a novel all on its own. The similarity starts and ends with the age of the main character, the vampire thing and how dark it is. Literally that is it. This book, and other vampire books sit at 2 vastly different ends of the spectrum. There is no romantizing the vampires. And personally, I liked that this was not really marketed as a vampire book. Aside for my knowledge of vampire invitations, the night time visits and the eerie but beautiful cover, there was no giveaway to the vampire tidbit. Now, before you go all crazy reader on me, this is not a spoiler. The author has mentioned that it is a vampire story and this in no way gives away the plot of the series of events that follow. I literally love this book. It is dark and can seem a bit slow to start with but it’s worth the wait.

Revealers is an interesting and fun magical read. I was initially drawn in by the cover because well come on who wouldn’t be, it’s gorgeous! I love the blue smoke and the simplicity in the design. So I did what most do when a book cover jumps out and snags their attention I flipped it over and got to reading the synopsis. I was all for it! I got to reading and I couldn’t put it down. I even remember where I was sitting for the couple of hours it took for me to finish it. It’s full of plot twists and interesting magic and witches. Its spooky to an extent
but really keeps you on your toes. This too stands on its own as a paranormal novel and book featuring a witchy cast. When all was said and done, I was super sad to see this story was over. They are not spooky in your typical sense but I do feel like these are great books to get you into the Halloween/Samhain mood. See what I did there 😉

Also, funny story guys, I penned a character who was a witch years ago when I was 14, before having read any of these books but she was nameless… I just kept using ‘insert name’ then I read Revealers years later, I loved the characters, all of them. But one name just kept haunting me. Fast forward 1 year and I actually met a woman with this name while shopping for incense. She was a pagan woman like my sister, but her personality was so similar to this witch I had written and it felt like it was meant to be. So in a weird chance of fate, this woman and the book ‘Revealers’ helped me name one of my main characters in The Birth Curse Series, I give you, Zahara Frost ladies and gentlemen.

Book Description:
When rejection comes back to bite you…

Jordan’s life sucks. Her boyfriend, Michael, dumped her, slept his way through half the student body, and then killed himself. But now, somehow, he appears at her window every night, begging her to let him in.

Jordan can’t understand why he wants her, but she feels her resistance wearing down. After all, her life — once a broken record of boring parties, meaningless hookups, and friends she couldn’t relate to — now consists of her drinking alone in her room as she waits for the sun to go down.

Michael needs to be invited in before he can enter. All Jordan has to do is say
the words….

 About The Author

Amanda Marrone grew up on Long Island where she spent her time reading, drawing, watching insects, and suffering from an over-active imagination. It didn’t help that her father told bloodcurdling stories, and would take Amanda and her siblings for moon lit walks in the graveyard—the highlight of which involved having them march up to mausoleums and knock on the doors—alone. On more than one occasion, Amanda turned around to find they’d ditched her for laughs. (No, she didn’t find that particularly funny.)

Not surprisingly, she was extremely scared of the dark—living in fear of cats meowing at the door at night (she was sure they were really monsters pretending to be her cats), and things lurking in basements, attics, dark rooms, and closets.Amanda successfully avoided monster attacks by leaving all the lights on in her house, and convincing other family members to let the cats in—eventually earning a B.A. in Education at SUNY Cortland. She taught fifth and sixth grade in New Hampshire, where she was known for putting on mini-musicals, and dissecting eyeballs and owl pellets with her students.

After taking a very early retirement to raise a family and write novels—some of which have vampires and other creepy creatures, Amanda now lives in Connecticut with her husband, Joe, two kids, two cats, a crayfish, hissing cockroaches, and
their newest addition is Griffin, a havanese dog who can say “Hello” and “I love you”. Check the links page to see Griffin’s YouTube videos where you can see him in action.

Amanda loves reading, going to Broadway shows, creepy crawly things, hiking, annoying her husband with show tunes, and is thinking about getting another tattoo. She is still scared of the dark.

Amanda’s first two books for teens, Uninvited and Revealers are available now, and her next book Devoured will be out in September of 2009. Her middle grade series The Magic Repair Shop Chronicles: The Multiplying Menace, Kobold Blues
and The Shape Shifter’s Curse will be available starting in the summer of 2010.

My Take:

That was a really cute story. A book I would definitely recommend, and one that I will be by my niece for Christmas this year.

I really enjoy the characters, and I didn’t feel like they were too young so to speak. They were pretty mature for their ages. I don’t mean mature in what you expect of a young adult story, but you aren’t drowning in their age. It’s mentioned a few times, and you told that they are in middle school but it’s not at all what you would expect from a middle grade fiction book. It’s focused more on a mystery and friendship and I have to say that has got to be one of the cutest stories I’ve read.

I also found, that I enjoyed the uniqueness of this story. It’s not every day you come across a story that has the world as supernatural and one character as normal. I also like that you find really brave individuals, braver than most and intelligent characters in the story. And while there is just a smidge of predictability, it’s done in such a way that you forget that you have your doubts and your speculations so when the story completely unfolds you’re just as shocked as the characters.

5 Quills

After a bit of research, I for one, am really happy that this is part of a series and not just a standalone novel. This is definitely something I would wholeheartedly recommend to parents looking for an interesting read for their children. It has a good message, overall great characters and nothing overtly heavy or depressing. I can’t wait to buy this for my niece and see how she reacts when she finishes reading it.

Wicked Series by Nancy Holder & Debbie Viguie Spotlight + #Giveaway! #TipsySpooktacular

Posted on Updated on

Welcome back lovelies! Today we’re doing a Spotlight on one of my favorite series.

The Wicked Series is one I picked up around 9 or so years ago. After reading the Witch & Curse compilation I was hooked. The next weekend I moseyed on over to Barnes & Noble and bought the next compilation and devoured it. The I freaked out because there was no book 5, no prospective release date and no definitive news stating that there even WOULD be a book 5. I followed the news as frequently as I could. The book got the red light and I calmed down some, excited to know that there would be an ending soon… but in true fashion, I forgot to jot down the release date.

Then one day, I was browsing the selves and I saw it. It was a no brainier, so I added it to my every growing pile of books that made even the employees look at me funny (I’m super short, 5’0 ft short and the book pile reached my chin when held directly in front of me. I know this cause there may or may not be a picture xD).

This series, single-handedly got me into this type of paranormal books. I couldn’t stop ready all the ‘witchy’ books I could find. I loved how the story while completely original did include some aspects of actual pagan lore. Its a really interesting series full of emotional highs and lows and lots of unexpected twists & turns.

This is my first spotlight of the month and its a book series I loved and completely recommend. Don’t be surprised if you get invested in the characters, or if you get angry with them, besides the whole magic and paranormal aspects they do come off as realistic.

My Take On The Book:

Well now, that was an interesting read. Where do I start with this review?

The book itself is not a very long read, roughly about 14 chapters not counting the prologue or epilogue. But in reading those chapters you do get a detailed account of the story being told.

The most important thing to be said about this story is the uniqueness of the tale and how thoroughly intriguing it is. It’s a different type of vampire story fused with history and an interesting take on biblical mythology (I say mythology because not everyone believes in the biblical stories so please no attacks.)

There is the typical romance in this story but luckily it is not one of those back and forth love triangle tales that frustrate the readers but the characters are well-rounded and full of backstories and history; not to mention the chemistry between them. While there is some predictability, it’s nothing to get in a snit about as it doesn’t deter the story in anyway or take away from the execution.

4.5 Quills

The authors, in my opinion did a stand up job creating this universe and the characters inhabiting it and I look forward to seeing where they take these characters and reading how the story unfolds. It’s a different kind of book so I can’t really pinpoint a title to compare it to but vampire readers this one is definitely for you. Also if you like a little history mixed in with your paranormal romance and a dash of magic then yep, it’s a book for you. 😀

About The Authors

Becca C. Smith:

Becca C. Smith received her Film degree from Full Sail University and has worked in the Film and Television industry for most of her adult life. In 2010 Becca published her first novel, Riser followed by the sequel, Reaper, in 2011, and the finale, Ripper in 2013. In 2012 Becca wrote the children’s novel Alexis Tappendorf and the Search for Beale’s Treasure. She is also the co-author of the teen graphic novel Ghost Whisperer: The Haunted. Most recently Becca released Atlas, the first book in a new urban fantasy series. She currently lives in Los Angeles, CA with her husband, Stephan and their two cats Jack and Duke.

F.M. Sherrill:

Aren’t author’s bios boring? I always wanted to read one that went something like this:

F.M. Sherrill: recent citizen of earth. Plans on ruling the planet once she gets over the common cold. Or, F.M. Sherrill: time traveler. Decided to alter the space-time continuum by writing a novel, thus changing history slightly, which will eventually lead to the rise of a new human species.

But here it is. F.M. Sherrill is a novelist, A.K.A. an avid bullshitter; that’s why she lives in L.A.. She’s been writing for as long as her ancient mind can remember, devouring tales like an anemic vampire roaming the streets in hot pink heels, always thirsty for more. When she’s not writing, she’s making steampunk weapons, sewing giant plant-eater Mario plushes, making costumes for some film bloke or cosplayer, and sculpting/casting movie prop replicas while gardening in her urban apartment. Her favorite tools? A soldering iron, a blowtorch, a band saw, a sonic screwdriver, a replicator and an active imagination.

Book Description:

I love Torin St. James…
I need his strength…
But someone from his past wants me dead.

Raine Cooper is certain of two things: her love for Torin St. James and her destiny to be a powerful seeress. But when she starts having premonitions, they are unclear and disturbing. Worse, they involve Torin. With her mother gone, her father dying, and her best friend in Hel, she is not sure who to talk to.

But when the visions become more personal and she foresees her future with Torin threatened by someone from his past, Raine becomes desperate for answers. Just her luck two new students arrive at her school and they seem to have answers. When with them, her powers are enhanced and her visions become clear. There is only one problem: Torin forbids Raine to see the two girls.

Can their love survive without trust?

My Take On The Book:

How do you start a review on a book you wish you’d never finished and want to re-read again and again…. Oh that’s right, I just did it lol ;). So lets skip the formalities and get right into the ‘why’ of my rating.

The Great (Pros):

  • Witches. I love witches lol. So its no surprise that I was pretty stocked when one of my favorite series introduced them. Sure there has been mention of them and tons of magic since book 1 but not the actual she-bang so it was a nice refresher.
  • Torin & Raine. Pffttt like I could write a pros and cons list and not include this swoon worthy couple. 😉
  • The Guys. We get a nice healthy dose of all the men we love. Although I could have done with a bit more of Echo and Andris snark.
  • Cora. This girl is just awesome so I loved that she was included in this story but if I’m honest with myself she’s not to prominent in this story. But her last line in this book totally had me reaching for my copies of book 1, 2 and 2.5 so I could re-read the epicness!
  • New Characters. I like when you get to meet new character in a series. It gives the already awesome characters the ability to grow and interact, so we get to see them in different situations. But I love it more we you become invested in those characters as much as the leads.
  • Character Growth. This book really focuses of Raine… way more as a singular person than part of a couple. You really get to see her grow up and I loved that. She’s not the only one with character growth but her evolution is the most prominent.
  • Eririk. I’ve grown to love his character immensely since book 2 and I was so happy to have a dose of Eririk in this one as well… tho, he’s not in this nearly enough.
  • Honestly…. I loved everything ❤

The Not So Great (Cons):

Umm that the story ended? There was no love triangle in this one… thank god. And the only problem I had with this book was that I finished reading it and I have to wait for the next release. But I guess I have to be a good little fan and wait patiently for the next installment. Oh and Eririk needs his happily ever after already! K thanks 😉

5 Quills

If I had to pick a book in this series that I felt was the best then this would definitely take the top slot. It’s epic in all its epicness.

Excerpt from Seeress

In-between classes, I cocked my ear to catch the song again. No such luck.

Lunch time, Torin was waiting outside my class, a group of girls hanging on his every word. One reached up and brushed his shirt. That was crossing the line. I stake my claim when I reached his side, sliding my hand into his. They took off. “Groupies?”

He laughed. “No.”

“Next time Leanna Finch strokes your chest, I’ll break her fingers.”

“Who’s Leanna?”

I forgave him for not noticing. Girls were always pushing boundaries like damn predator checking for weaknesses. Someone needed to tell them Torin and I was tight. Fortified like Fort Knox. “Have you seen Ingrid?”

“No.” He stroked my cheek with his knuckles. “Are we eating here or at home? I can make us something.”

I wanted to stay there and let him stroke me. His touch was intoxicating. But first things first. “Okay, but I need to ask Ingrid something first.”

He went still. “About?”

“Something.” I reached up and kissed him. “Go. I’m right behind you.”

He didn’t look happy leaving me behind, which was sweet.

“I won’t take long,” I added.

He nodded. With a fingertip brush across my cheek, he disappeared into the men’s room to find a portal. I shook my head. Sometimes he could be so possessive. He hadn’t had a relationship in centuries and was learning to adjust to ours, which hadn’t exactly been smooth. What mattered was we loved it each other, knew it and cherished out time together. Whatever bumps laid ahead, and I was sure the Norns weren’t done with us, I was determined to never let them destroy what we had.

I turned the corner and saw Cora at the cafeteria entrance. Her lunch schedule depended on whether or not Echo was around. She waved.

“Please tell me you’re eating here. Please. Echo will be gone most of today and evening,” Cora explained. “There was a fire at some nursing home in Seattle.”

“I’m heading home, but you can join us. Torin already left to make something.”

She sighed melodramatically and looked around the cafeteria. “I don’t want to be a third wheel.”

“You won’t be.”

“Nah. Go enjoy your man.” She waved and I turned to see three girls from the swim team, Kicker, Sonya and Tess. “I’ll join the girls and catch up on the latest gossip. See you tonight.”

“You want to come and watch The Originals online? I missed last two episodes.”

Her eyes widened. “Ohmigod, the poor, damaged, just-needs-to-be-loved Klaus. I have to get my Klaus fix every week. I’ve even gotten Echo to tolerate him. Okay, I’ll watch with you, so we can hate on some witches. I also want your opinion on something.”

“Okay.” Ingrid, her cheerleader friends, and their jock boyfriends walked in.

Cora beamed at me and gave me a quick hug. “You’re the best.”

Everyone at Ingrid’s looked up questioningly when I stopped by their table. “What?”

“Where’s Torin?” a girl asked.

“Around. You know I can actually breathe without him. Ingrid.” I indicated outside with a nod and took off.

“What’s going on?” she asked, sounding a bit worried.

“I want to pick your brain.” Some of the students were hanging out on the deck. Others threw football in the grassy area along the building. It was still cold, but the sun was up and diehards were already wearing shorts. I found an area away from the others and faced her.

“You are beginning to worry me,” Ingrid said. “If this is about Andris—”

“No, this is about me. Do you remember I told you last night that I heard the woman sing during my vision?”

She nodded. “Varðlokur.”

“Varo-what?”

“The warding or spirit-summoning song. We sing it before the Seeress goes into a trance. What about it?”

“I thought I heard it this morning.”

Her frown deepened. “Where?”

“Here at school. What does that mean?” I saw a movement from the corner of my eyes and turned to look. It was Blaine. He waved.

“I don’t know. I guess whoever sang the song last night is a student here.”

“But the Seeress was older. At least, she sounded older.”

“Uh, that’s because the Seeress never does the singing. Someone else does. You sure it wasn’t the same voice?”

I nodded. Someone working with a Seeress was here at my school. “Is Blaine waiting for you?” He was talking to friends but he kept looking in our direction.

Ingrid waved to him. “No. Do you want me to point her out when I recognize her?”

“You can do that?”

She shrugged. “Oh, yes. It’s like, uh, having a witch radar. Why do you think Maliina hated you from the moment she saw you?”

“Uh, because Andris was being a total douche?”

She laughed. “That came second. My sister was a powerful Seidr witch, but in you, she saw something else. Something she’d never seen before and she was jealous. Maliina always wanted to be important and, uh, revered. Back at home, they did, but it wasn’t enough. Then she met Andris and he turned her. But he took her away from home and her adoring fans. She stopped being important and she didn’t like it. That’s why she joined the Norns. She was very ambitious.”

It didn’t excuse what she’d done, but it made sense. “So what did she see in me?”

Ingrid shrugged. “A more powerful witch, I guess. I’m not as strong as Maliina, but I should be able to spot the witch here at school. I’ll let you know when I do.”

“Thanks.” I really liked this new Ingrid. She stopped by the group with Blaine, said something to him and disappeared inside the building. Blaine followed her. I went to the nearest restroom and headed home to Torin.
